We feel it's important for the public to stay up to speed and involved in the design process of the Vermillion Downtown Streetscape. If you'd like to be notified via email when a new update is released, please subscribe!
Concerns have been voiced about the sloped area in front of Varsity Pub. While this transition area isn't governed by codes or guidelines, we hear you and are working with City staff and the BID board to address the concerns in these areas. We appreciate all who have reached out to provide feedback on this and other matters. Most of the sidewalks, curb and gutters, and hardscape areas have been installed. Colored concrete has been poured and very notable changes are taking pl
Although rain pushed back the start of construction by a week, it is now in full swing. Construction crews have almost completed removals for Phase 1 and have poured the sidewalk up against the buildings. Colored concrete is now starting to be installed and additional curbs and bump outs will follow. Phase 2 removals (ie: streetlights and pavement) will start at either the end of this week or the first part of next week. What does this mean for you? It's important that the pu
The next step of Vermillion's downtown streetscape project is underway! Schwartzle Construction will begin work this week. The City of Vermillion, along with Stockwell Engineers, held a pre-construction public open house on April 1 to inform the public on next steps and what the construction phase will consist of. We explained the process of working with each property owner in the project area to ensure continued pedestrian access and discussed ways to minimize construction i
We're ready to put a shovel in the ground for Vermillion's exciting downtown renovation project! After advertising the project last month and receiving three construction bids on March 4th, the Vermillion council awarded the project to Schwartzle Construction. Schwartzle Construction is based out of Tea, South Dakota and came in as the lowest bidder on the project. They were awarded the contract on March 15 and we're excited to officially introduce them to you at an upcoming
Take a look! We are excited to share the current plans and renderings for the Downtown Vermillion Streetscape Project. These plans were shared with the public on January 21, 2021 during an open house at Vermillion City Hall. Representatives from our office presented the plans and City staff joined us in being available for questions and conversation surrounding the project. One of our favorite elements is how the drum cadence of the USD fight song is incorporated into the fro
It's time! Thank you to the 80+ people who provided feedback on our initial downtown streetscape designs last Thursday evening! During Thursday on the Platz, the public was invited to review our streetscape revitalization options and leave sticky notes with positive feedback, ideas, and constructive criticism. With the project designs currently at 25% complete, people's feedback will be vital information as we proceed to develop the designs further. Two different options were proposed f
After a productive virtual public meeting on June 10th, we held a series of virtual stakeholder meetings to get even more feedback and input on the downtown renovation project. Attendees had great ideas, expressed valid concerns, talked through proposed ideas, and gave us a lot of feedback to consider as we get to work designing Vermillion's new and improved downtown. After gaining all of your feedback, we hit the drawing boards and are currently developing plans that reflec
We love hearing from the people who will be using the spaces we create! It's crucial to get public input on projects like the Vermillion Downtown Streetscape Design, because it's the residents who know that space in and out, and have great ideas on what they'd like to see happen with it. While we would've preferred to meet with people in person, due to safety precautions, we held our public input meeting via Zoom last evening. David Locke, Stockwell's landscape architect and
We got up close and personal with Vermillion's downtown on a recent site visit. Our Stockwell team met with City staff and business owners to walk the streets and inspect everything from drainage to safety measures. We discussed what the project goals look like, what's working right now and what isn't, and took the first steps toward revisioning Vermillion's historic downtown.
